Scottish government 'to buy public sector electricity'

The Scottish government is reportedly planning to issue a tender to buy electricity for all public sector organisations in the country.

It has been claimed that ministers are considering the move in an effort to reduce the impact of rising energy costs on the sector, with the Herald claiming that the single contract may save around £15 million.

Scotland's finance secretary John Swinney said that the proposal could also reduce the carbon emissions produced by the government.

He said: "As energy prices are rising, this government will take all practical steps to protect the public purse.

"The national procurement of electricity will be important in minimising the impact of spiralling prices on the public sector."

Reports on the plans have come after the Scottish National Party's Westminster energy spokesperson Mike Weir claimed that recent disconnection figures were "appalling and alarming".

Ofgem found that the number of people who had their energy disconnected in relation to debt rose by 3,000 over last year.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18736226-ADNFCR
